World Animals Day falls today by Edward Arambewala Human beings have a bounden duty to ensure the rights of animals, who are also part of our planet's natural environment. They too have a right to live in an environment conducive to them, states Penny Jayewardene, Chairperson of Society for the Protection of Animal Rights (SPAR) Sri Lanka in a statement issued to mark World Animals Day (October 4th). She adds, since man being the superior of the living species on earth, is controlling the entire earth with its living species, and since the lesser beings like animals with no voice at all on their life is entirely dependent on man's mercy for survival. Their cause has to be taken up by organisations like the SPAR and the Animals Welfare and Protection Association (AWPA). At a meeting in the Philippines capital Manila, in March, representatives from 21 countries heard presentations on animal welfare laws and standards in different countries. At the end of the conference, which was organized by the Philippines government, it was agreed that animals be recognized as living, sentient beings. A declaration stated the welfare of animals shall be a common objective for all nations, steps should be taken by countries to prevent cruelty and standards on the welfare of animals must be developed and elaborated. Among the countries represented were the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh and Singapore. |
