Govt. orders relief for flood-hit families

Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera and Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya yesterday toured the flood affected Galle and Matara districts and immediately ordered to provide navy boats and cooked food and dry rations to flood victims. Rs. 100,000 will be granted for each house destroyed by the floods, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Viji Jegarasasingam said.

She said that victims of May 2003 floods in Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara and Hambantota districts have been provided financial assistance. In this connection a sum of Rs.693.9 million has been provided to Divisional Secretaries in the relevant areas. Rs.232 million has been provided for the Matara district while Rs.228 million provided for the Ratnapura district. Rs.105 million has been provided for the Galle district.

According to the National Disaster Management Centre official the houses Eight persons have been reported killed due to floods in Kalutara, Galle and Matara districts. Seven persons from the Galle district and one person from the Matara district have been killed. The total number of injured persons is three.

She said that 1334 families have been affected and 89 houses completely damaged while 211 houses have been partly damaged. The total number of affected Gramaseva Niladhari Divisions is 104. Instructions have been given to the director, Social Services to provide relief for the families of the dead persons and displaced families. All Divisional Secretaries in the flood affected ares have been requested to submit flood damage reports.

The Met Department Duty Forecaster said that the rains were ceasing and there will be morning showers in the Western, South and Sabaragamuwa provinces. Thundershowers will develop in the afternoon or evening in several parts of the country.
