Register elephant tusks or face prosecution by Florence Wickramage A programme to register elephant tusks has been launched by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWLC) on the advice of Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake, DWLC Director-General H.M.B.C. Herath told the Daily News yesterday. Herath called on all those in possession of elephant tusks to contact the department for official permission by registration or face prosecution for illegal possession. It has been brought to the notice of DWLC that unregistered elephant tusks have been found in the possession of persons and institutions in many parts of the island. The registration programme which commenced several years ago had suffered a lapse in the recent past. There has been several reports of illegal elephant poaching for tusks from protected areas. This programme will be strictly enforced islandwide to stop this illegal practice. |
