Four major irrigation projects before year end

by Ananda Kannangara

A record Rs. 27,600 million worth four major irrigation projects - Deduru Oya, Menik Ganga Basin Development, Uma Oya Diversion and the Moragahakanda Reservoir - will be commenced by the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management before December this year.

The main objective of commencing these foreign funded mega projects carried out on Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's directive is to provide water to 20,000 hectares of arable lands.

Under these four irrigation projects, water will be distributed to agricultural lands, lakes and canals in Yala, Kataragama, Hambantota, Chilaw, Moneragala, Trincomalee, Matale, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Puttalam districts.

It has also been planned to generate hydropower for at least 26,000 families including farmers.

Irrigation and Water Management Minister Gamini Jayawickrema Perera told the Daily News that according to a research, unemployed youth in these areas are willing to start small scale industrial projects such as garment mills, paddy mills and garages.

He said that special attention will be focused on the development of agriculture and the supply of domestic water which has become a major problem in many areas. It is estimated that Rs. 6200 million will be spent on the Deduru Oya Project, benefitting nearly 14,000 families while Rs. 2600 million will be allocated to the Menik Ganga Basin Development project.

Under the Uma Oya Diversion project, Rs. 2800 million will be allocated to divert Uma Oya water to Kirindi Oya.
