UNICEF keen on childcare by Nadira Gunatilleke The UNICEF closely monitors the peace process of Sri Lanka which has offered UNICEF a good opportunity to work with and for children, `Regional Director, UNICEF Regional Office for South Asia, Sadig Rasheed said. He was addressing the national seminar on childcare provisions in pre-schools in Sri Lanka held at the BMICH, Colombo recently. It was organised by the Social Welfare Ministry in collaboration with UNICEF. Rasheed said that most brain development take place in a child before reaching the age of five. This is the very vital stage of childhood but most of the parents still ignore this despite awareness raising. Sri Lanka is well ahead of the other countries in the region in this sector and the country's infant mortality rate has also gone down. Early childhood development is not only important for the children but also for the nation as a whole, he added. Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera said that the children are the future foundation of a country. Pre-school teachers are the persons who handle children at their early and the most important age. Therefore it is important to provide a good training. The study gives a clear picture of the present condition of pre-schools in Sri Lanka. The information discovered from this study will benefit the scholars, NGOs and all other parties concerned about this topic. It was revealed that at present there are about 10,000 pre-schools run by individuals, non governmental organisations and other organisations in Sri Lanka. |
