SLT powers BIA with Wi-Fi Mobile Internet Zone

Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) launches Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Mobile Internet Zone, popularly known as Wi-Fi Hotspot, at the Bandaranaike International Airport terminal(BIA). Wi-Fi is a wireless broadband network which is simple to access, easy to use and does not require a waiting period for set up or preparation that is typically needed for cable based broadband systems such as Digital Subscriber Lines (DSL).

All that is needed to utilise this service is to wander into "SLTnet Wi-Fi Internet Zone" and authenticate their connection using the required prepaid card for instant access to the internet via this mobile access network.

With these "SLTnet Wi-Fi Internet Zone" continuously online at the Airport - through SLT's service and continuing support - there will be a capability of accessing up to 11 Mbps, depending on the traffic handled by the network at any given time, which is even greater than speeds available through residential broadband facilities such as DSL.

BIA "Hotspots" can be utilised by those in a certain area who have a laptop with a Wi-Fi enabled PC card or a hand held device with a Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) adapter. There will also be a need for authentication once a person is online in the network so that they can access the Internet. Access to the wireless web through this network can only come about through the purchase of a prepaid SLTnet internet access card which is currently available at many shops at BIA but for an introductory period the service is available at BIA for free of charge.

This venture is a partnership between Sri Lanka Telecom and BIA to promote Sri Lanka as a business destination through enhanced services for business travellers who spend an inordinate amount of time in transit. Through these SLTnet Wi-Fi Internet Zone, SLT and the BIA are on the cutting edge of one of the trendiest initiatives which virtually encompasses all publics through its ease of connectivity.

These "Wi-Fi Internet Zones are an ideal situation especially for business oriented travellers who can stay in touch with the office and/or access their online Enterprise Resource Planning options through the Internet rather than experiencing a communications blackout. Businessmen can therefore more productively utilise their down time while tourists and habitual web surfers can also benefit when they are in a "Wi-Fi Internet Zone" as they will also have more options to keep them and their families entertained while they are in transit.

Wi-Fi Internet Zones represent a growing segment of people who like to be in touch through mobile access facilities while also enjoying the advantages of a metropolitan city life such as at airports, coffee shops, libraries, universities and other public venues.

The need to be alone and out of the office and home yet still be able to work or play with the same facilities has drastically improved the quality of life of many people as now people can still stay connected to the world via the pulse of mobile access technology such as Wi-Fi. It can be easily understood why this technology has so deeply affected the psyche of its users by giving them a freedom to explore while meeting their commitments - its gaining popularity is a testament to its reliability and the positive reaction it has elicited from its increasing scope of users worldwide.
