National School Games : Western Province overall champions by Chris Dhambarage and Sunil Abeywardena Western Province with a total of 737 points clinched the overall championship at the National School Games 2003 concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Sunday. North Western Province with a total of 386 points emerged runners up while Central Province who collected a total of 317 points were placed third. Southern Province with 267 points came in fourth followed by Sabaragamuwa Province (247), North Central Province (164), Uva Province (41) and North Eastern Province (24). The National School Games also produced 37 new meet records and one record was equalled. Ratnayake MMV Walalla representing the Central Province won the boys overall title in the athletic championships obtaining a total of 97 points. They were closely followed by Mahinda College representing the Southern Province and Royal College from Western Province who were jointly placed second with a total of 72 points each. Senanayake MMV Madampe representing North Western Province clinched the girls overall title in the athletic championships with a total of 103 points. Ratnayake MMV from the Central Province came in second with 86 points followed by Devi Balika MV (83 points) from the Western Province. Ratnanayake MMV also produced the best athlete at the meet with T. W. G. M. Pushpakumara producing a record breaking performance in the 400 metres event clocking 47.23 seconds. The best female athlete was R. M. C. Subashini of Senanayake MMV, Madampe where she won the girls 400 metres event with a timing of 56.68 seconds. St. Peter's College representing the Western Province and Senanayake MMV Madampe from the North Western Province emerged joint champions in the boys under 15 championship with 30 points each. Royal College and St. Sebastian's College both from the Western Province were placed joint second with 24 points each. Yasodara BMV from the Western Province won the girls under 15 title with 27 points while Devi Balika BMV also from the Western Province came second with 25 points. The boys under 17 overall title went to Mahinda College from the Southern Province with a total of 38 points. Ratnayake MMV from the Central Province emerged runners up with 35 points. Senanayake MMV Madampe from the North Western Province took the girls under 17 overall title with a total of 85 points while Devi Balika MV from the Western Province came second with 58 points. Ratnayake MMV also bagged the boys under 19 title collecting a total of 60 points while Royal College from the Western Province were the runners up with 43 points. Sooriyawewa National School representing the Southern Province won the girls under 19 overall title with 51 points while Holt Family Convent Wennappuwa from North Western Province came second with 41 points. Ratnayake MMV Walalla continued their dominance by winning the boys under 21 title too with a total of 50 points. Anuradhapura MMV from the North Central Province were placed second with 32 points. Sumana BMV Ratnapura from the Sabaragamuwa Province won the girls under 21 overall title with 54 points and Ratnayake MMV Walalla emerged runners up with 37 points. Meanwhile W. P. Jayaratne of Bibiladeniya representing the North Western Province won the boys mini marathon with a timing of one hour, 10 minutes and 34 seconds while L. K. C. D. Perera of Ratnayake MMV Walalla from the Central Province won the girls mini marathon clocking one hour 24 minutes and 12 seconds. D. S. Senanayake College representing the Western Province won the boys relay championship with 20 points followed by Mahinda College Galle (19) and Anuradhapura MMV (17). Senanayake MMV Madampe won the girls relay championship with 28 points followed by Ratnayake MMV Walalla (19) and Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa (17). |
