Mannar security strengthened

by Ranil Wijayapala

Security in Mannar town and Mannar islands was beefed up yesterday as tension arose following a clash between two groups over the destruction of a religious structure, defence sources in Mannar said yesterday.

Military Spokesman Colonel Sumedha Perera told the Daily News that the situation was brought under control by yesterday afternoon after troops were deployed in Mannar town and Mannar islands.

Four people have reportedly been injured during the clashes as a group of Tamils from Pallemunai have attacked some Muslims in Mannar islands. The fishermen from Pallemunai area had observed that part of a religious structure has been destroyed.

However, the situation was brought under control after some Ministers in the area and Security Forces personnel intervened.

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Spokeswoman Agnes Bragadottir said that truce monitors in Mannar also followed the situation and will carry out investigations if the clashes are related to the LTTE.
