LTTE will not go back to war, says Kaushalyan by Uditha Kumarasinghe The LTTE Political Wing Leader for Batticaloa and Ampara Districts E. Kaushalyan said the LTTE has no intention to go back to war. The LTTE did not engage in war out of choice. When the Tamils' rights were not safeguarded and Tamils were killed, the LTTE was forced to commence war to safeguard their community, Kaushalyan told a farmers' meeting at Arshad Devanayagam Hall, Batticaloa on Saturday. Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S.B. Dissanayake presided. The farmers' meeting was organised by Lakpohora to look into Batticaloa district farmers' problems. "Having clearly understood the severe hardships faced by the people during the past two decades of war, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe commenced the peace process to bring about a lasting solution to the ethnic problem by inviting the LTTE to the negotiating table," he said. The peace process is continuing successfully and development activities in Batticaloa and other districts have commenced, he said. "We pray that the war would not recommence and hope for the dawn of a lasting peace in Sri Lanka," Kaushalyan said. He said nearly 17,000 LTTE youth have sacrificed their lives in the battle front for the sake of the motherland and 80,000 people have died from the ethnic war including a large number of innocent Sinhala youth and civilians. "If the war begins again, it will only lead to the destruction of lives and properties," he said. "Therefore the LTTE's intention is to safeguard the people's rights and for harmonious living among all communities," Kaushalyan said. With the arrival of the Agriculture Minister to Batticaloa, all people are watching with interest development in agriculture and livestock sectors going to take place in Batticaloa, he said. Kaushalyan said resources to develop agriculture and livestock sectors in the district were lacking. Therefore, resources should be granted to these areas similar to other parts of the country. "We also place confidence on the minister's promises to develop the agriculture and livestock sectors in Batticaloa." |
