These unions also blamed the lethargy of the bureaucracy to counteract the well planned programme to cripple CEB functions. A senior trade union official told the Daily News that VSS has organised a picketing and a protest rally on October 8 in front of the CEB, claiming that the CEB Provident Fund Monies were going to be deposited with the Central Bank, while the Reforms Office has assured that the CEB will continue with its private EPF scheme. Power Sector Reforms Office head Nihal Wickramasuriya said the proposed seven companies which will replace the CEB were granted permission to continue with its private EPF scheme after consultation with the Attorney General and the Labour Commission. The union official blamed the CEB for not taking steps to counteract the misleading information campaign of the JVP backed trade union. "The officials simply turn a blind eye," he said. VSS plans to drag branch office workers, who are not updated with the situation. "This is clearly a well planed JVP campaign. They have created a chaotic situation in the hospitals and the universities and now they want to attack one of the country's chief utility system," the official said. He said further delay of the restructuring programme may cause difficulties within the CEB. "We have reasons to believe that the restructuring may be put off till April. But the Reforms Office is optimistic that they would be able to carry out the programme before the end of this year," the official said. He appealed to the workers not to be misled by false information of the VSS. |
