Chef shortage : Hotels in a soup

A shortage of qualified chefs are reported in hotels as many have gone abroad for greener pastures.

Chefs passing out from the Government Hotel School leave the island as they are paid a low salary in Sri Lanka, while some chefs go abroad to upgrade their knowledge. A total of 1,250 trained students pass out annually from the Government Hotel School in Colombo and eight regional centres. Most go overseas resulting in a shortage of chefs in hotels.

The number of tourist arrivals is expected to double or even treble by 2010. Lankapuvath
