Consulate opened in Montreal

An Honorary Consulate of Sri Lanka was opened in Montreal, Canada on Sunday by Foriegn Minister Tyronne Fernando, who is on an official visit to the country. The consulate will serve the needs of the some 30,000 people of Sri Lankan origin who live in the cosmopolitan, French-speaking city.

Minister Fernando gave the act of appointment to the Honorary Consul Alain Bono in the presence of Foriegn Secretary Bernard Goonetilaka and Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in Canada, Geethanganie de Silva.

Later a reception was held by Consul Bono and the Sri Lankan community in Montreal for the Minister. It was attended by associations representing all ethnic communities and a cultural show depicted all these groups.

Minister Fernando told the gathering in French and English that the time had come for the friends of Sri Lanka to take advantage of the relative peace and encourage trade and investment in Sri Lanka.

On Monday Minister Fernando will hold official talks with his Canadian counterpart Bill Graham and Secretary of State for Asia-Pacific David Kilgour.

As he is the first Sri Lankan Foriegn Minister to visit Canada in 24 years, he will be presented to the House of Commons by the Speaker in the afternoon.
