by Rajmi Manatunga A third jumbo was killed after being knocked down by a speeding express train on the Habarana-Trincomalee main line yesterday. The incident brought to a temporary halt the train operations on this stretch of track. The train plying from Trincomalee to Matara had rammed into the lone elephant while it was crossing the track.The incident took place in Habarana. According to the operations unit of the Railways Authority the incident had taken place in the early hours of yesterday when the elephant was walking across the rail track. "The elephant had been knocked down by the Trincomalee-Matara train and was killed on the spot. Train operations were held up for several hours in the morning owing to the mis-hap ," a spokesman for the Authority told the Daily News. This is the third time in one month that an elephant was run down by a train at Habarana on the same railway line. Two wild elephants died on the Habarana-Trincomalee railway line last Saturday night after being run down by a train. |
