Chief Adhikarana Sanghanayaka of Western Province

Venerable Attudawe Piyaratana Nayaka Thera, Chief Incumbent of the Sri Vimalaramaya Viharaya Ratmalana has been appointed the Chief Adhikarana Sanghanayaka of the Western province by the Sangha Council of the Malwatta Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya.

The induction ceremony of the nayaka thera will take place at the historic Seema Malakaya of the Malwatta temple Kandy on October 4, at 3.30 p.m. The ceremony will be officiated by the Mahanayaka thera of the Malawatta Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya most venerable Rambukwellle Vipassi thera. Venerable Piyaratana Nayaka thera will also be conferred the honorary title "Pravachana Keerthi Sri Vinayacharya" by the Sangha council of the Malwatta Chapter.

A special ceremony to welcome venerable Piyaratana nayaka thera will be held at the Vimalaramaya temple Ratmalana on October 5. Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya will present the Akthapatra to the Nayaka thera at this ceremony. The new image house of the temple will also be opened on October 6 in concurrence with the ceremonies. Venerable Piyaratana nayaka thera has been beacon of light to the Buddhist clergy and the laity of the area in both religious as well as social work. The venerable thera has earned the respect of people throughout the country as a virtuous exponent of the Dhamma.

Born in Attudawa Matara in 1939, venerable Piyaratana thera entered the Buddhist order in 1954. After completing his secondary education at the Vidyodaya Pirivena Maligakanda, the venerable thera entered and graduated from the Vidyodaya University.

He also underwent a special missionary training course at the Peradeniya University in 1972. As a teacher he served in various parts of the country and finally served for over 17 years at Lalith Athulathmudali Vidyalaya Ratmalana till his retirement in 1996. The venerable thera was appointed the secretary of the Dehiwela-Ratmalana Sasanarakshaka Balamandalaya in 1985 and serves in the position to date.

With a pleasant personality and humble qualities, Venerable Piyaratana thera continues to give leadership to social and religious work and is hailed as an exemplary monk of the area.
