by Kumudini Priyanka Kurugalagamage A workshop to initiate a project for schoolchildren to educate them on environmental pollution was conducted at the Russian Cultural Centre last Friday. It was organised by the Joint Media Coalition under the patronage of Kandy District PA MP Dr.Sarath Amunugama who is also a patron of the Joint Media Coalition. Delivering the keynote address, Dr.Sooriya Gunasekera of the Colombo University observed that the Western countries who are boastful of their rich industrialisation achievements are poor in environmental cleanliness to the extent of polluting the environment of the oriental countries. The soil infertility in his country compelled the white man to resort to industries dependent on natural resources such as coal and firewood. In countries like ours, where the rain water is enriching the soil, we must pay attention to the weather changes and the environment on ground to build up an agriculture based economy to save ourselves from the ravages of industrialisation, he said. In addition to Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Environment Foundation Limited Programme Coordinator Bandu Ranga Kariyawasam, Peradeniya University Lecturer Manel Chandrakanthi and Joint Media Coalition President Indrajith Perera also delivered lectures. Western Province Governor Alavi Mowlana, Russian Cultural Centre Chief Administrative Officer Buddhapriya Ramanayake, Chess Instructress Suneetha Wijesuriya and JMC Secretary Ajith Jayasundera were present on the occasion. |
