29 detained housemaids return next week

by Ananda Kannangara

Twenty-nine Sri Lankan housemaids detained in Riyadh will be flown to Sri Lanka early next week, Lankan Embassy officials in Riyadh said.

This follows a request by Labour Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe to the Saudi Arabian Government during his official tour to the Gulf Region this January.

"These workers had left their working places due to the sudden closure of factories they worked and are also facing various other hardships," Sri Lanka Burean for Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Susantha Fernando said.

During the stay in Riyadh, Samarasinghe and Fernando with the assistance of the Sri Lankan Ambassador made several attempts to get the victimised workers released and bring them back to Sri Lanka.

"Eighteen female workers were flown into the country last year due to our efforts," he said.

The Bureau will bear Rs. 22,500 for travel expenses of each worker under a directive by the Minister.

Fernando said after Samarasinghe's official visit to Gulf countries during the latter part of last year, a special scheme had also been drawn up to provide safety and welfare measures for Sri Lankan workers.
