Police hunt for six u'grads by Manjula Fernando Police are looking for six undergraduates including a bhikkhu student of Sri Jayawardenapura University in connection with last Tuesday's clash which left nearly 20 injured and many university properties damaged, Mirihana Police HQI Quintus Raymond told the Daily News yesterday. He said the arrested students were given bail due to lack of evidence on a direct connection between them and the clash. A team of police officers have been deployed to track the six suspects from their home towns in Baduraliya, Kandy, Galle and Ratnapura where they are believed to have gone after the university was closed last week. According to Mirihana Police, active members of the Inter University Student Federation and its Bhikkhu federation are among the six suspects. Meanwhile, the University Registrar said the Medical Faculty and the Post Graduate Institute began academic activities yesterday. The senate in consultation with faculty heads decided to open the Science Faulty on October 1 and the Management Studies and Commerce Faculty on October 6. However, a date for the re-opening of the Arts Faculty is still undecided. The Sri Jayawardenapura University was closed on Tuesday following a bloody clash between two student factions. The reason for the clash was an assault on a group of students planning to hand over a petition to the Vice Chancellor against the delay of Mahapola scholarship the previous Friday. |
