Four suspects nabbed by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The biggest ever drug haul seized outside the Police Narcotics Bureau, 2kg and 740g premium quality brown sugar worth over Rs.5.5 million was taken into custody by the Mulleriyawa Police on Sunday. The Police also found Rs. 617,120 in the suspects possession. The two suspects taken into custody revealed that they had been in the drug business for over five years. A billionaire drug kingpin in Kottawa area is said to be their boss. When Police raided the drug lord's house, the suspect had fled the country, Mulleriyawa OIC Inspector Kamal Pushpakumara told the Daily News yesterday.
The team seized several luxury vehicles including a Prado whose original paint has been modified by the suspects. Investigations also revealed that the drug lord had used 15 cellular phones and his monthly phone bill had exceeded Rs. 75,000. A special team headed by OIC Crimes SI Maldeniya had been sent to Weliwala, Mulleriyawa by the OIC. The Police team in civiies took two suspects carrying a travelling bag into custody. Inside the travelling bag, Police found pure brown sugar well packed and sealed inside several packs of a well known brand of milk powder. Two electronic weighing scales capable of weighing very small amounts of heroin were also found by the Police, OIC Crimes said. One suspect arrested is said to be the owner of two jewellery shops in Wellampitiya and Sea Street while the other suspect is alleged to be a retail drug dealer. The Police later took another two suspects into custody. Meanwhile, the Director PNB, SSP Pujith Jayasundara told the Daily News that Mulleriyawa Police had handed over a bundle of sealed documents found inside the travelling bag for further investigations. The documents are said to contain vital information on the drug lord's international links. Police are trying to ascertain whether the money inside the bag was used for bribing law enforcement officers or was collected by drug sales. Western Province South DIG K.P.P. Pathirana praised the Police officers who conducted the investigation and said that this raid will be "an eye opener" to the public, amidst allegations made against the Police. Under the directive of the DIG, Mulleriyawa Police OIC Inspector Pushpakumara and OIC Crimes arrested the suspects. Investigations were handed over to the PNB. |
