CCC signs MoU with Franco Lanka Business Council

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and the Franco-Sri Lanka Business Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 19, as a furtherance of the objectives of the MoU between the CCC and the Confederation of Small and Medium Sized Enterprises of the Rhone-Alpes Region.

With this signing, the two parties would use all available opportunities to promote, strengthen and expand trade, economic, scientific, technological co-operation and other business relations between concerned organisations of both parties, exchange inform ation about commerce, industry and economy, assist their members in establishing and strengthening business contacts through the organisation of events such as conferences, seminars, exchange of Trade and Investment missions and participation in trade fairs, with the objective of promoting the growth of trade between Sri Lankan and French businessmen.

The FSLBC (Franco-Sri Lanka Business Council) is expected to open an office in Colombo and would be undertaking to file with the CCC annually, a list of office-bearers with contact details, audited accounts and annual report. To further strengthen ties with France Minister of Labour and Employment and Chief Government Whip, Mahinda Samarasinghe will visit Lyon, France today.

The visit is being organised jointly by the Sri Lankan Embassy in France the CGPME (Chamber of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises) of the Rhone-Alpes region and Franco-Sri Lankan Business Council.

The Minister will be the featured speaker at a seminar organised jointly by the CGPME and the Sri Lankan, Embassy in France on "Investing in Sri Lanka" where he will discuss recent labour reforms and their impact on FDI in Sri Lanka. He will also launch the "Maison de Ceylan" project in Lyon.

The Maison will be a showcase for Sri Lankan products and services to be displayed in France's second largest city.

The Minister will also be received by the Mayor of Lyon and will also meet officials from AGEFOS. AGEFOS is a national organisation that arranges among other things, training programs for employees of SMEs.

At an official lunch the Minister will meet the heads of external trade organisations from the region to further promote Franco-Sri Lankan commercial linkages. Sri Lanka's Ambassador in Paris, Ananda Goonasekera, the Commercial Counsellor, Nimal Karunatilleke, the President and Vice President of FSLBC, Tima Lazarus and Deva Rodrigo, will accompany the Minister throughout the official program.

The Minister will also be the Guest of Honour at the Annual General Meeting of the FSLBC that will also take place on the same day.

The program marks the first official visit by a Sri Lankan Minister to the city of Lyon. As the capital of the powerful Rhone-Alpes region and second only to the Paris region for its economic and scientific strengths, Lyon is among the 10 wealthiest regions in Europe.

The capital of the ancient Roman Gauls, a large trade centre with renowned fairs in the Middle Ages and a powerful financial centre created by influential Florentine bankers in the Renaissance period, Lyon has always acted as a link between northern and southern Europe, thanks to its geographic location and openness to economic, cultural and migratory exchanges.
