New company to print telephone directories

Four Sri Lankan printing companies have formed a consortium and set up a joint venture company named NAPCO (Pvt) Ltd. Acronym for National Printers Consortium, NAPCO aims to save foreign exchange that flowed out of the country to print telephone directories.

Up to the year 2002 all Sri Lankan telephone directories were printed either in Malaysia or Japan.

Chairman of Sri Lanka Telecom, Thilanga Sumathipala initiated the change to have this job done by Sri Lankan printers to encourage Sri Lankan printers to develop and activate a printing industry which was threatened by imports.

The Export Development Board (EDB) with the facilitation of the Sri Lanka Printers' Association invited printing companies for initial discussions and finally the printers who had capacity to execute the massive print order conforming to SLT time frames were short listed.

As a pilot project 50% of the Sri Lanka Telecom Provincial Directory 2002/2003 was produced and printed by four Sri Lankan printers viz: Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd, Sravodaya Vishvalekha, R. S. Printek and Sumathi Book Printing.

The data base conversion and pre-press work was done by Premadasa Group. The new company was launched at a ceremony at the Sarvodaya Head Office at Rawatawatte, Moratuwa early this month. The name NAPCO for the new company was coined by Areesen Ahubudu who officiated at a ceremony.

The investors of the joint venture company are Premadasa Group, Sarvodaya Vishvalekha, RS Printek and Sumathi Book Printing and the secretaries are Corporate Affairs (Pvt) Ltd.

The new company hopes to install a printing press imported from Japan. In compliance with the plans of Sri Lanka Telecom for re-scoping telephone directories NAPCO hopes to provide subscribers up-to-date and accurate information while saving the country a large amount of foreign exchange.
