Minister of Foreign Affairs Tyronne Fernando will visit Canada from September 27 to 29. He will be a guest of the government of Canada which will be the first by a Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka to the Canadian capital after 24 years, a press release said.

His programme in Ottawa includes a meeting with his counterpart, Hon. Bill Graham, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada, a lunch hosted by Hon. David Kilgour, Secretary of State (Asia Pacific) of the Department of Foreign Affairs and a meeting with the Canada-Sri Lanka Parliamentary Friendship Group at the Parliament complex in Ottawa.

Minister Fernando will also meet the "Canadian Friends of Sri Lanka", a group comprising eminent Canadians whose objective is to enhance bilateral relations between Canada and Sri Lanka through economic, social, cultural and educational activities to be promoted by the group.

During this three-day visit the Minister will open the newly established Consulate of Sri Lanka in Montreal and meet the members of the Sri Lanka Community in Montreal and Canadian invitees at a reception to be held to mark the inauguration of the Consulate. The first Honorary Consul of Sri Lanka in Montreal is Alain Bonneau.

Minister Fernando will meet the members of the Sri Lankan expatriate community in Ottawa at a reception to be hosted by Sri Lanka's envoy in Canada, High Commissioner Geetha de Silva.
