University education should fulfil requirements of employment market - Minister Tissa Attanayake

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South Group Correspondent

"If educational reforms are not made to suit the type of education provided in the Universities at present no useful purpose will be served in providing such an education as they will not be fulfilling the requirements of the employment market. This will progressively increase the problems of the unemployed graduates", said the Minister of Central Region Development Tissa Attanayake.

He made these observations when he addressed a meeting of unemployed graduates from the Kandy District at the auditorium of Mahamaya Girls College.

Minister Attanayakwe said in Sri Lanka only 1.5 per cent of the school children who gained admission to the primary section of the schools gain admission to the Universities. Therefore, this small group is a valuable set of students who are assets to the country.

They form the intelligentsia. But if you look at this from a critical point of view doubts will be raised whether the students nurtured in the universities are geared to meet the challenges of the modern world and whether they measure up to the requirements of the employers in the context of present business world.

These graduates cannot be blamed for this state of affairs. It is the officials who prepared the different courses in the universities who should take the rap as they have not been sensitive to the present day requirements. It is their duty to prepare courses to meet the requirements of the country and its programmes. Officials responsible should take immediate measures to conduct courses in the universities for which there will be a demand in the job market.

Minister of Science and Technology and Kandy District MP Keheliya Rambukwella said that the government intends in helping the unemployed graduates to gear them meet the requirements of the job market. It is with this in mind that his Ministry is taking steps to train the unemployed graduates in Computer Literacy and Information Technology.

The days of testimonials and certificates are numbered and what will be required in the future will be skills and to meet the requirements of the employer who may decide to give you a piece of work and expect you to finish it within a given timeframe.

At this ceremony the Director of Mahapola Trust Punchinilame Meegaswatta, Chairman, Kandurata Bank A. B. Weerakoon, Fourth R Project Director Gamini Hettiarachchi informed the unemployed graduates of the various facilities which are available to them through their respective organisations.
