Rs. 480m to help low income groups in Matale The central region development ministry has successfully undertaken to renovate 21 lakes and dig 350 irrigation wells as well as providing job training to 1935 persons under the REAP programme to uplift the living standards and income generation of the low income group in the Matale district. The project which is a five-year plan to uplift the rural people, will be implemented under the development of commercial agriculture, trade development and providing of jobs, rural loan and aid, and business management sectors. International fund for Agriculture (IFAD) will provide Rs. 780 million for the project while the Sri Lankan government will invest Rs. 200 million. Developing the production of vegetable seeds and improving the agri-training services, with the help of 7 private companies are going on, while 21 lakes will be be renovated and 150 irrigation wells dug under the small-scale irrigational agri - wells programme. Another 150 irrigation wells are expected to be dug before the end of this year. 414 women have been given business training under the business and job training programme. While 228 have started self-employment. While 345 have received small-trade training, 948 youth have received job training, 526 of them getting employed. Rs. 77 million has been lent to 2170 businessmen under the rural loan aid programme. Loans upto Rs. 5 lakhs under a concessionary interest from state and private banks of the area can be obtained under this programme. |
