by Nadira Gunatilleke

The 32nd session of the General Conference of the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be held at the UNESCO Headquarters in France from September 29 to October 17, a Education Ministry spokesman said.

He said that the Sri Lankan delegation consist of Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku (Leader), Mass Communication Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Sri Lanka to France Ananda Goonasekera, Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary V. K. Nanayakkara, Mass Communication Ministry Secretary Kumar Abeysinghe and the Director General of the Central Cultural Fund (CCF), A. P. Gunasekara will be participated in this session.

The session is of vital importance as Sri Lanka has presented its candidature to the executive board of UNESCO. The elections to this board will take place at the conference on October 10. Sri Lanka has served in the executive board on two occasions previously.

After a lapse of 12 years Sri Lanka has expressed its willingness to join the executive board considering it extremely important at this juncture to be a member of this important body when the Government has embarked on a process of negotiations seeking a peaceful solution to the conflict in Sri Lanka.

Since becoming a member of the UNESCO, Sri Lanka has played a significant role in its activities. Sri Lanka has been a member of UNESCO since November 1949.

In 1999 Sri Lanka celebrated the Golden Jubilee of establishment of the National Commission of UNESCO. The General Conference of UNESCO consists of the representatives of 190 member states of the organization. It meets every two years and is attended by the member states.

The General Conference determines the policies and main lines of work of the organisation, all issues concerning the general policy of the organisation and occasionally by focusing on certain major themes.
