Electricity for more Jaffna households by Rashomi Silva Over 85 percent of the Jaffna peninsula will be supplied electricity with the opening of ten rural electrification projects shortly, the Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya said in a recent press briefing held in his ministry in Colombo. The coverage exceeds the average national coverage, the Minister said responding to a question by a journalist. "With the opening of the ten RES most of the government controlled areas will be electrified. We have opened several RES in uncleared areas as well, " he said. "The government does not discriminate against any race, religion or a political belief. We want to make electricity a right of everyone rather than a privilege of selected few." Rural electrification played a pivotal role in the uplift of community life, social and otherwise in the recent past. Sri Lanka and India were the only countries in the South Asian region who had reached a remarkable level in civic development. With the opening of the RES we hope to see a revival in the folk life, there will be new ventures putting up, new employment opportunities created and as a result the entire economy of the country will develop. Asian Development Bank is the main donor agency helping Sri Lanka in carrying out the RES projects. |
