Ambassador visits plantations to oversee projects Ambassador of the Netherlands, Susan Blankhart visited the Estate Plantations in Badulla, Nuwara Eliya and Hatton regions from September 22-24 . The Netherlands has provided assistance to the plantation sector since 1986 under the Social Welfare Programme I and II that ended in 1998 and was co-funded by the Norwegian government. Under the programmes approximately Rs. 1,500 million has been provided by the Netherlands government to improve water, sanitation, health and housing conditions of the estate plantation workers including supporting activities. Under the present Plantation Development Support Programme (PDSP) implemented by Plantations Human Development Trust and running from July 1998 to June 2005 approximately Rs. 1,443 million is committed jointly by the Norwegian and the Netherlands governments to further improve housing conditions including water, sanitation and health facilities, as well as child development activities. The Netherlands government will provide more than Rs. 820 million of the total sum. During the visit on September 20 the Ambassador inspected the ongoing housing schemes, the completed child care development centres and certain healthcare activities of Kinellan Estate, Craige Estate, Pitarathmale Estate in the Badulla region. Similar facilities were visited on September 23 and 24 in Holyrood Estate, Mattakele Estate in Nuwara Eliya region and Yullefield Estate in the Hatton region. During this visit it was observed that the health facilities have improved and vital statistics of health conditions have shown progress. It was also observed that participation of workers in housing construction and the support provided by the estate management in implementing these activities is very positive, a press release said. |
