World Tourism Day celebrations

The World Tourism Day falls today. This year the World Tourism Day will be celebrated in Beruwala electorate. The theme of this year World Tourism Day is "Let us make Beruwala an impressive Tourist City".

This programme will be held in Beruwala electorate under the guidance of the Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar. Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge and Minister of Tourist Development, Ranjith Maddumbandara will participate in World Tourism Day functions. Under this programme 1,000 trees will be planted in Beruwala Tourist Resort areas including Moragalla, Kaluwamodara and Ganegama.

A special painting competition under the above World Tourism Day theme will be held in Beruwala schools from 9 to 1.30 p.m. today and more than 1,000 students will participate in this event.

The beach cleaning programme is one of the main features of this programme and beach areas, roadways leading to the beach will be cleaned under this programme. Government officials and schoolchildren will participate in this cleaning programme.

The World Tourism Day seminar under the theme of "How Tourism could help to reduce poverty, create jobs and contribute to social harmony" will be held at Club Palm Garden, Beruwala beach at 1.30 p.m. today and this will be held under the patronage of Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge. Department of Posts has made arrangements to issue a special stamp to celebrate the World Tourism Day with 25 residential birds of Sri Lanka and this event will be held at the Club Palm Hotel, Beruwala at 4.30 p.m. under the patronage of Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.

A special kite competition by the school children and water boat racing competition will be held at Beruwala with the participation of local and foreign tourists. The closing ceremony of World Tourism Day will be held at the Bentota Tourist Resort with the ceremonial opening of a new post office and postal locale constucted at a cost of Rs. 5 million by the Department of Posts.

Minister of Mass Communication, Imthiaz Bakeer Markar will ceremonially open the above post office. Minister of Tourism, Gamini Lokuge, Minister of Tourist Development, Rajith Maddumabandara and member of Galle district Gayantha Karunaratne will also participate in these functions.
