University authorities to decide on J'pura opening

Tertiary Education and Vocational Training Ministry is now working with the authorities to reopen the temporarily closed faculties of the Sri Jayawardhanapura University while Police investigations continue to arrest suspected students responsible for clashes.

Tertiary Education and Vocational Training Minister Kabir Hashim addressing a press conference yesterday said that he has been informed that steps are now being taken to reopen the temporarily closed Management and Applied Sciences Faculty of the university. The students of the Medical, Applied Sciences and Management faculties have made an appeal to Vice Chancellor D.S. Epitawatte that their faculties be opened despite the clashes since they are adhering to the rules and regulations of the university.

A decision on the opening the Arts faculty is to be taken after lengthy discussions with students, parents and lecturers over maintaining discipline within the university.

The Minister said the Medical Faculty of the university is continuing as usual unaffected by the recent incidents.

Minister Hashim said he has already informed the university authorities and the University Grants Commission Chairman Prof. Ranjith Mendis to conduct a full investigation over the incidents and to submit a report to him. The Minister also said in addition to university level investigations, Police investigations will also be conducted to estimate the damages on the university properties and to punish those who are responsible for those damages.

The Minister stressed that the university authorities can control violent situations within universities if authorities can take steps to ensure the rights of student unions after repealing political influences.

Meanwhile, three special Police teams have been sent different parts of the country to nab students who are responsible for the clashes within the university as they have already left for their villages following the closure of the campus.
