SriLankan Airlines received the highest accolade of "Best Overall In-flight Entertainment" (for a fleet size of 20 or less) at the prestigious World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) Avion Awards in Seattle, Washington, USA, on September 12, 2003. Founded in 1979, the WAEA is the official worldwide network representing over 75 airlines and 200 airline suppliers committed to excellence in in-flight entertainment. Now in their 15th year, the Avion Awards honour excellence in several categories of airline in-flight entertainment, covering audio, video, print media and the top awards of 'Best Overall'.

The 'Best Overall' ranking is determined by a composite score received by each qualifying airline based on that airline's individual scores in selected print, audio and video categories.

The in-flight entertainment entries were judged for originality, suitability, production value, content and balance. The 23-member international panel of judges evaluated nearly 200 samples of in-flight audio, video and print that appeared in commercial service during the period from June 1, 2002 to May 31, 2003.

The winners were announced on September 12th at a Gala Dinner following the WAEA 24th Annual Conference and Exhibition.

The ceremony, which was attended by over 600 industry entertainment professionals from airlines, suppliers, aircraft manufacturers and movie makers, capped the week-long, international 'market-place' for passenger airlines and their in-flight entertainment suppliers. In previous years SriLankan was also successful at the Avion Awards winning Second Runner-Up for Best In-flight Entertainment Guide in 2000 and First Runner-Up for the same award in 2002.

The airline did not enter in 2001. Says Walter Riggans, Head of Service Delivery at SriLankan: "This is yet more proof of the very high standards of service being offered by SriLankan Airlines. We have the 'World's Friendliest Cabin Staff', we were First Runner-Up for the 'World's Best Cabin Staff' and our Airport Service staff were voted amongst the top ten airlines for 'Airport Service Quality at Home Base Airport'.
