The unlikely support came from Parliamentary Affairs Minister A.H.M. Azwer who took up cudgels with the Marxist party for its onslaught against the Head of State. He was referring to the "derogatory remarks" by JVP MP K.V. Lal Kantha targeting the President at a recent Trade Union meeting in Colombo. "The President's rights and powers are guaranteed by the Constitution. No member can insult the President. She is the President of the country. This is a very serious issue," Azwer told Parliament. Interior Minister John Amaratunga endorsing his colleague said that a substantive motion should be brought in the House to discuss the alleged remarks. Speaker Joseph Michael Perera said a Substantive Motion could be brought before the House if a derogatory statement had been made against the President. The issue was first raised by Polonnaruwa District MP Sydney Jayaratne following oral questions. |
