With reference to the article "Prime Minister to hold talks with European Heads of State" from Chatura Vidyaratne in New York in yesterday's Daily News the European Union has sent us the following clarification: Chris Patten is the EU External Relations Commissioner. Javier Solana is the EU Foreign Policy High Representative. Ireland is to assume the EU Presidency on 1 January, 2004 which is currently held by Italy. Portugal is an EU Member State, Iceland is not. Cyprus, Latvia and Estonia are to join the European Union on 1 May, 2004. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will meet the EU TROIKA on 25 September in New York. The TROIKA is made up by the current and next EU Presidency, EU High Representative and EU Commission. |
