by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare Ministry provided sewing machines for 80 needy widows from Piliyandala area to start self-employment under the ministry's special programme to assist women in difficult circumstances to mark the 97th Birth Anniversary of former President J.R. Jayewardene. Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera said that former President J.R. Jayewardene launched a revolution of development in 1978 which brought instant development to all levels of the society. It provided the base for sustainable development of Sri Lanka. The Minister also said that late President Jayewardene opened the country's economy into the world as soon as he came into power and it was the beginning of present development. He also built five main reservoirs and it was a landmark in the Sri Lankan history. About 40 percent of the total population in Sri Lanka can benefit from the different services provided by the Social Welfare Ministry, he added. The Social Welfare Ministry started a sewing training course for young women in Padaviya area. The duration of this course is six months with theory and practicals being included in it. The ministry has provided all equipment needed for this course. |
