At the recently concluded 43rd council meeting of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisations (CTO) held in Kampala, Uganda from September 8 to 11, Sri Lanka's Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission Themiya Hurulle was elected Vice Chairman of the CTO Council states Telecommunications Regulatory Council release. This is the first instance that Sri Lanka has been elected to such a position in the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisations. The CTO is the official body dealing in Telecommunications and promoting the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT's) for development within the Commonwealth. The headquarters of the CTO is based in London and comprises 50 full and associate Commonwealth Member Countries with its origins going back to the very beginning of the 20th century, when the governments four dominions joined together in the first ever Commonwealth Co-operation in the Telecommunications sector - laying the first Trans-Pacific Cables by the newly created Pacific Cable Board in 1901/1902. The council also accepted the proposal of Sri Lanka to host the next council meeting of the CTO in Sri Lanka in September 2004. |
