by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare Ministry will build 58 new houses for disabled persons at a cost of Rs. 2.9 million to mark the International Day of Disabled Persons which falls on October 1, a Social Welfare Ministry official said. He said that the houses will be built in the Kalutara district. Construction work of twenty houses has already commenced. One disabled person will be given Rs.50,000 to build a house. About 64 disabled persons submitted applications for housing assistance and 58 of them were selected. Six applications were rejected due to shortcomings in the applications. Several educational and cultural programmes will take place parallel to the National ceremony to be held in Kalutara to mark this day. The ministry has made arrangements to set up a vocational training centre by November. The ministry has made arrangements to hold the International Day of Disabled Persons in the Kalutara district shifting from its regular venue in Colombo. A special discussion was held at the ministry in connection with the plan of action on rehabilitating disabled persons in the Kalutara district. Mass Communication Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Vijayalakshmi Jegarasasingam, Director, Secretariat for the Disabled Persons, Malini Samarasinghe, Kalutara District Secretary and the Divisional Secretaries of the Kalutara district were present at the discussion. |
