by Rajmi Manatunga The private and CTB operators' dispute over the newly-implemented private bus timetables took a turn for the worse yesterday when a CTB crew was attacked by a private bus conductor on the 176 Dehiwela- Hettiyawatte route. Metropolitan Bus Company Chairman Tyronne Peiris said that the CTB employee engaged in operations in the same route was admitted to hospital after being severely assaulted. "The clash had arisen when the private bus operators tried to prevent CTB buses from halting in bus stops. "The CTB employee was badly attacked and had to undergo surgery the same day," he said. According to the Chairman, only around 12 CTB buses operate on the Dehiwela-Hettiyawatte route where the number of private buses exceed 80. "They are obstructing the operation of even these few buses inconveniencing commuters and school children travelling on season tickets," he claimed. Private bus operations on 12 routes in the Western Province were rescheduled from yesterday according to new timetables designed by the Western Province Transport Authority. The move is expected to cut short delays in reaching the destination, reduce traffic congestion and increase night services. However, problems have arisen since the new timetables provide only for private bus operations while leaving out CTB buses. |
