by Florence Wickramage A Rs. 3.3 million elephant hospital will be opened today, at the Uda Walawe National Park. This is the first hospital of its kind to be established under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. The hospital is completely funded by the Born Free Federation of the United Kingdom. Dr. Taraka Prasad, veterinary surgeon of the Department of Wildlife Conservation said that this hospital affiliated to the Ath Athuru Sevana at Uda Walawe National Park will be a boon to the department's work of caring for injured elephants. The Born Free Federation will also donate Rs.13 million worth of equipment to the hospital. This includes a Land Rover Jeep. Stranded and injured baby elephants are cared for at the Ath Athuru Sevana till they can be released into the wilds. |
