Qatar eyes Lanka for investments In a bid to promote bilateral negotiations on investment promotions, Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) and expanding air services between Qatar and Sri Lanka, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani is expected to visit Sri Lanka in December. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake who visited the Sheikdom of Qatar over the weekend had extended an invitation to Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani to visit Sri Lanka in December. The Prime Minister en route to attend the UN General Assembly met the Emir with Karunanayake for bilateral negotiations on investment promotion, Free Trade Agreements and expanding airline services. Qatar is actively in search of overseas investment opportunities as the sheikdom is one of the few countries that has surplus capital and marked a hyper growth rate in the last few years. The Emir had told minister Karunanayake that Sri Lanka had been identified by Qatar as one of the investment destinations and had already expressed interest in investing in the hotel and tourism industries. |
