NDB scholarships for students in Matara The National Development Bank (NDB) under its program "Developing Young Minds", awarded its first set of scholarships with AFLAC International to students in the Matara district at a ceremony at the NDB - Matara branch recently. NDB's Matara branch has selected eight A'Level students from two local schools as recipients of these scholarships for two years. The scholarship holders are Lahanda Purage Janaka, Hewage Ravindranath Tharanga, Madurachcharige Hasitha Madusanka Dilruk, J. G. Chinthaka Kumara from Rahula College and G. L. W. Erandi Nisansala, Jayana Lakshani A. Vitharana, Ruwani Wathsala Jayawickrema and Darshani Dushanthi Edirisinghe from Sujatha College. The students, principals from both schools, Kithsiri Liyanagamage from Rahula College and Ms. C. H. Pinidiya from Sujatha College, Dulsiri Jayasumana, Manager - NDB (Matara Branch), Deshapriya Wickramasinghe, Manager - NDB Bank (Matara Branch) and staff members participated. The "Developing Young Minds" program project began five years ago. The NDB initially gifted computers to schools situated around its branch offices as a community service project. The main objective of NDB's Developing Young Minds program is to foster interest and familiarity and create an appetite for computer-based learning and multimedia among schoolchildren of all levels. In addition to gifting computers to schools, the Bank has also set up a cyber cafe the 'Planet Internet' at the Colombo Planetarium. Planet Internet has over 1,000 students registered and is extremely popular and visited by students from all over the island. The demand daily to visit the cyber cafe exceeds the number that can be accommodated. AFLAC International has been instrumental in gifting scholarships to needy students islandwide for the last eight years. |
