Commonwealth Finance Minister's conference opens today

Finance Minister K. N. Choksy will lead the Sri Lankan delegation to the Commonwealth Finance Ministers' conference which opens today in Brunei. The Conference will be declared opened by the Sultan of Brunei at the International Convention Centre.

Other members of the Lankan delegation are Treasury Secretary Charitha Ratwatte and Faiz Mohideen, Deputy Secretary to the Treasury.

JRJ's 97th birth anniversary today

The commemoration of the 97th birth anniversary of President J. R. Jayewardene will be held today (September 17) at the J. R. Jayewardene Centre Auditorium, Colombo 7, commencing at 4.30 pm under the patronage of Power and Energy Minister Karu Jayasuriya. The commemoration speech will be delivered by J. R. P. Suriyapperuma while a review oration will be made by Prof. Vinnie Vitarana.

"A 364-page book titled " Cartoon Shilpeen Dutu JR " created by veteran cartoonists such as Jiffry Yoonus, G.S. Hettigoda, Amitha, Opatha, Wijesoma and Motagedara will also be released to mark the occasion," Secretary General, J. R. Jayewardene Centre, Prematillaka Mapitigama said.

Nawala Nihal associate in custody

A suspect alleged to be a close associate of Nawala Nihal was taken into custody by the Dehiwela Police along with 9mm pistol and seven live bullets, Dehiwela Police said yesterday.

The suspect was taken into custody in a search operation carried out on Monday night. The investigations had revealed that the suspect was on bail at the time of arrest for trafficking of heroin.

The father of the suspect is also said to be a notorious character serving jail terms for drug trafficking and for possessing a bomb, Police said.

Under the direction of DIG K.P.P. Pathirana, the Dehiwela OIC R.P. Senanayake is conducting further investigations.
