Divulapitiya group corr. The Sri Lanka Educational, Cultural and Social Organisation (SLECSO) affiliated to the International Buddhist Centre (IBC) in France has rendered 8 years of invaluable service towards the welfare of schoolchildren and undergraduates of low income families in Sri Lanka since its inception in 1994, said Ven. Paravahera Chandaratana Nayake Thera, Director, International Buddhist Centre in Minuwangoda and its affiliate in France. He was addressing the gathering at the 2003-2004 Scholarships and Diploma Awards Ceremony of the International Buddhist Centre, Minuwangoda held at its premises recently. Ven. Chandaratana said apart from awarding scholarships to needy students the International Buddhist Centre has been engaged in wide ranging social service activities throughout the country over the last few years. These included the distribution of dry food items, clothing and medicine among deserving families in remote and urban areas of the country. He said so far a total of over 500 students have been beneficiaries under these programmes. This year, 17 undergraduates and 40 schoolchildren received scholarship awards. Ven. Chandaratana said gift parcels containing vital educational equipment have also been donated to more than 1,000 students countrywide. All this had been made possible due to the munificence of Sri Lankans resident in France who contributed lavishly for these programmes. Prof. J. B. Dissanayake addressing the gathering stressed the need for students to gain new knowledge to keep pace with technological developments in the modern world. |
