The Supreme Court Monday granted Leave to Proceed with the Fundamental Right application filed by a senior lecturer of the Open University. The Bench comprised Justices Mark Fernando PC, C.V, Wigeneswaran and T. B. Weerasuriya. Petitioner Senior Computer Science Lecturer of the Open University cited the Open University, its Vice-Chancellor, Dean of the Faculty of Natural Science and the University senate as respondents. Petitioner stated that he applied for the post of Associate Professor\Professor, in terms of a Circular of the University Grants Commission on July 2002; however, the Senior Assistant Registrar informed him that his name was not recommended to the said post by the selection committee on the grounds that he had not obtained the required marks. Petitioner claimed that he was one of the five Doctors specialised in Artificial Intelligence and had conducted various experiments. He further stated petitioner had been a visiting lecturer to all the universities, and there was no experts in Sri Lanka in this field at the level of a professor. J. C. Weliamuna appeared for petitioner. The hearing was fixed for November 28. |
