Ten new housing schemes for government servants in WP

The Government is to start ten housing schemes for middle class government servants. 1500 houses will come up under this project. According to the Western Region Development Ministry, this is the first time that middle class government servants have been targeted, the office of the Government Spokesman said.

These projects are expected to be completed in 18 months and occupied by 2005, the ministry sources added.

The Government has allocated Rs. 1470 million for this project. The ten housing schemes coming up under this project are, Sea Avenue at Colpetty, Galle road Colpetty, Kolonnawa, Peliyagoda, Ratmalana, Katuwana-Homagama, Pelangasthuduwa, Depanama-Pannipitiya, Rajagiriya-Kalapaluwawa and Bandaranayakapura.

Of this, Pelangasthuduwa housing scheme will consist of 300 houses, Katuwana-Homagama housing scheme will have 250 houses, Rajagiriya-Kalapaluwawa and Bandaranayakapura housing schemes will have 175 houses each.

Peliyagoda housing scheme will have 126 houses, Depanama-Pannipitiya scheme will have 75 houses, while Colpetty Galle road scheme and Colpetty Sea Avenue schemes will have 40 and 36 houses respectively. There will be 1500 houses in total. These schemes will have houses in five sizes, namely 925 Sq.ft, 750 Sq.ft, 660 Sq.ft, and 550 Sq.ft.

With the implementation of the project there will be job opportunities for 3000 persons including engineers, supervisors, masons, electricians plumbers and helpers and after the opening of these schemes in 2005, it is expected that there will be permanent employment to around 250 persons according to the Rural Development Authority.
