by Nadira Gunatilleke The Social Welfare Ministry will launch a Rs. 2.5 million programme to upgrade the nutrition condition of rural women. This will be launched under the direction of Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera, a Social Welfare Ministry spokesman said. The program we will be launched from Badulla and Moneragala districts. In the first phase, about 15 Divisional Secretariat divisions in the two districts will be covered. The programme will be extended to other areas soon. The programme's main aim is to build a healthy generation. Rural women suffer from malnutrition because they work harder than urban women. They are also affected by poverty and do not have enough income to have nutritious meals. Therefore babies born to those mothers are malnourished and it continues as a circle. By implementing this new programme the Social Welfare Ministry will focus its services on an area which had been neglected for a long time but which needs constant attention of the authorities. |
