The Government of Sri Lanka agreed to donate a consignment of tea to South Korea as a measure of relief to the victims of recent floods in Boosan Province where over 120 persons lost their lives. Lal Dharmapriya Gamage, Minister Assisting Foreign Affairs who is currently in South Korea for a three-day official visit has informed the South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs and Commerce Yoon Young Kwan accordingly. During their meeting, Minister Gamage expressed his concern on behalf of the Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando and the Government. He also recalled how the Government and the people of South Korea extended their solidarity to Sri Lanka when confronted with a similar calamity last May. Gamage also met Oh Jee Chul Assistant Minister of Cultural Tourism of South Korea, and had talks with him. At this discussion, the importance of consolidating the relations between South Korea and Sri Lanka as two Buddhist countries received serious attention of the two Ministers. The possibility of attracting more Buddhist and cultural tourists from South Korea to Sri Lanka was also discussed. The two Minister agreed to provide necessary facilities for the purpose, a Ministry Assisting Foreign Affairs news release said. The Chairman of the Korean Air Lines has met the Minister Gamage and agreed to look into the possibility of resuming air services between the two countries. He said that a team comprising high officials of the Airline would be sent soon to study the matter. W. Wijeyasiri, Sri Lanka's Ambassador in South Korea, Mrs. R.S. Athukorale, Secretary, Ministry Assisting Foreign Affairs and officials from both countries were present on the occasion. |
