by Florence Wickramage The Bio Energy Association of Sri Lanka (BEASL) has developed a plan to establish biomas based power plants to generate 50 per cent of the country's requirement by 2010, an association spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. Three modern biomas based electricity and thermal generation power plants have already been established in Sri Lanka with the pioneering efforts of the Ministry of Science and Technology. This is despite there being no positive response from the Ceylon Electricity Board to consider biomas based electricity as a long-term electricity generation option for the country. If the new developed plan of the BEASL takes off, the association said it could create an additional annual income of Rs. 90,000 to about 60,000 farmer families. The programme will also increase the tree-cover of the country by 176,000 ha. A media conference organised by BEASL today will be addressed by Moratuwa University Chancellor Vidyajothi Dr. Ray Wijewardana who is also BEASL President. This will be a forum where there will be an update on the progress in the sector as well as announce the future plans for the energy sector formulated by the BEASL. |
