by Manjula Fernando The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) and the Bambalapitiya police are investigating an alleged assault on several students of a leading Colombo girls school who were staging a protest against their principal last week. The students have complained to the Bambalapitiya Police and the NCPA on Friday that a group of unidentified persons assaulted them when they flocked to the schoolground to protest against their principal's administration last Thursday. "They attempted to photograph our protest. When we said no, they attacked us," the children had complained. They have stated that the attackers were with the school principal and some of the teachers who supported her actions. A spokesman for the NCPA said they were yet to verify the statements of students. Seven students complained to the NCPA and some have sent in the complaints by fax. NCPA officers are due to take a statement from the principal today. The National Schools Director has also initiated an inquiry into Thursday's protest by students, said to be against the transfer of three teachers of the school. The official spokesman of the Ministry said the teachers of this leading school are divided over the principal's strict administration and it has been reported that some teachers have manipulated students to go against the principal. Under a policy decision of the Ministry, 200 'excess' teachers in the Western Province, including three from this school, were transferred to other schools within the same province last week. Some staffers have blamed the principal for the transfers. However, the Ministry says the allegation was baseless. In a bid to settle the issue, the National Schools Director who visited the school on Thursday had decided to suspend the transfers until further notice. |
