Great opportunity for Southern Province - Matara Mayor

by Bernard Perera

The Dinamina-Nestomalt Marathon which will be held on September 27 from Weligama to Matara will give the Southern town of Matara lot of encouragement, said the Mayor of Matara Nimal Silva speaking at a press briefing held at Weligama recently.

He said: "that I too was not aware of the results of this event up to now. After gaining the knowledge about the event I am of the view that it is sure to give the residents of the Southern Province to know what a marathon means.

It has a historical value", he said. It will also be a cultural value to the event when it is held out of Colombo, where the residents of the area get an opportunity to compete with competitors from other areas".

This event is sure to attract the youngsters to sports. That is why the Matara Municipal Council is ready to give its fullest co-operation for this event. This will not only help the youngsters to compete but also the chance for elders to see the young ones at competition where they could help and encourage the competitors from the Southern Province. The event will be one of the biggest sporting events to be worked off in Southern Province".

It has to be supported not only by the Municipal Council but also by the people of the Province. The masses of the Province should thank the organisers Nestle Lanka Ltd. and Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd for giving the Southern Province an opportunity to hold the event.

He made it a special occasion to thank the Southern Range Deputy Inspector General of Police W. D. Prathapasinghe for grabbing the opportunity to run the event in our area.

This sort of sporting activity will definitely bring in good results, as such we assure the fullest co-operation for the organisers to make this a highly successful event. He also said all schools in the area are keen on this event.
