Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club drew first blood with a stunning 33-28 win over Police SC while Wesley College dominated the opening day of the Premier championship inter school rugby tournament which commenced at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place, yesterday.

Navy SC collected their points from five tries and a penalty while Police SC responded with one goal, three tries and two penalties.

The Wesleyites stole the limelight with both their junior and senior teams advancing into the semifinals of the under 17 and under 19 tournaments quite convincingly. Wesley's opponents in the under 17 tournament semifinals will be either Lumbini MV or Mahanama MV who are schedule to meet in the second quarterfinal today. In addition Ananda will confront Zahira on Tuesday and Trinity College Kandy will be up against Asoka Vidyalaya on Wednesday.

The Wesley under 19 team also came out with a splendid performance as they outplayed Nalanda College by 36 points to 7 in their quarterfinal fixture. The Wesleyites collected their points from three goals and three tries after having led 12 nil at half time. The Nalandians managed to score only a solitary goal.

The Wesleyites are determined to make an impact in this tournament after they narrowly missed the Milo 'A' division League championship. They are certain of making it to the final of the under 19 tournament as they next meet either Prince of Wales College Moratuwa or Science College in the semifinals. In the bottom half S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia will take on St. Sylvester's College Kandy on Tuesday while the defending champions Isipatana will face Lumbini MV.

Earlier S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia launched their campaign for the under 15 title with a close 12 points to nil win over Piliyandala Central in their quarterfinal encounter. The Thomians are set to meet the winners of the Trinity v Thurstan game which is schedule for today at the same venue. The remaining two quarterfinal fixtures of the under 15 tournament are Dharmaraja College Kandy v Wesley College on Tuesday and St. Sylvester's College Kandy v Isipatana on Wednesday.

Meanwhile in the under 13 tournament St. Sylvester's College Kandy scored a hard fought 12 points to 7 win over Royal Panadura in their pre quarterfinal fixture.
