Premier rugby C'ship tomorrow

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando has directed the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) to put off the Premier championship inter club and inter schools rugby tournament by one day as a mark of respect to the late Most Venerable Madihe Pannaseeha Mahanayake Thera whose funeral will be held on Saturday.

The tournament which is sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports will now commence on Sunday and the venue been the same at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place.

The tournament was inaugurated last year to achieve a new level of participation by schools and clubs and to make rugby a more entertaining and enjoyable sport.

The tournament is also quite a significant one with the total prize money exceeding well over ten lakhs. The champions of the inter club tournament will receive a handsome cash award of Rs. 200,000 with the runners up taking a cash award of Rs. 100,000. In addition all six participating teams in the club tournament will receive Rs. 50,000 each.

The champions of the under 19 inter schools tournament will take away a cash award of Rs. 100,000 and the runners up will receive Rs. 50,000. The champions of the under 17 tournament will receive a cash award of Rs. 50,000 with the runners up receiving Rs. 30,000. The winners of the under 15 tournament will be presented a cash award of Rs. 40,000 and the runners up will receive Rs. 25,000.

The winners of the under 13 tournament will pocket Rs. 30,000 and the runners up will be presented Rs. 20,000. In addition all participating schools will receive a cash award of Rs. 10,000 each.

The six club teams which have confirmed their participation in this tournament are CR and FC, Sri Lanka Army Sports Club, Havelocks Sports Club, Sri Lanka Police Sports Club, Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club and Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club. The six teams have been drawn in two groups with CR and FC, Police SC and Navy SC in group 'A' and Army SC, Havelocks SC and Air Force SC in group 'B'.

The last year runners up Sri Lanka Police Sports Club and Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club will have the honour of playing in the curtain raiser of the club tournament on Sunday at Longden Place with the kick off at 6.00 p.m.

In the second quarterfinal Havelocks Sports Club will take on Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club on Monday. The defending champions CR and FC and Sri Lanka Army SC have received a bye into the semifinals which will be worked off on September 20 and 21 respectively.

In the inter school under 19 tournament the teams competing are Wesley, Nalanda, Prince of Wales, Science College, S. Thomas' Mount Lavinia, St. Sylvester's College Kandy, Lumbini MV and the defending champions Isipatana. The schools vying for honours in the under 17 tournament are Wesley, D. S. Senanayake, Lumbini MV, Mahanama MV, Ananda, Zahira, Trinity and Asoka Vidyalaya.

The schools competing in the under 15 tournament are S. Thomas', Piliyandala Central, Trinity, Thurstan, Dharmaraja, Wesley, St. Sylvester's and Isipatana. The schools which have confirmed their participation in the under 13 tournament are Royal, S. Thomas' Bandarawela, Ananda, Vidyartha, Isipatana, St. Aloysius, S. Thomas' Mount Lavinia, Richmond, Royal Panadura, St. Sylvester's, St. Joseph's, Kingswood, Wesley, Ehiliyagoda Central, Carey and St. Anne's College Kurunegala.

All finals will be worked off on September 28 at the Sugathadasa Stadium under lights.
