Two PSD men acquitted in UNP stage attack case by Sarath Malalasekera The Maligakanda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena while acquiting two suspects, SI W.R. Lionel Ranaweera and Police Constable Anura Senanayake, of the President's Security Division (PSD) severely warned the main prosecution witness PSD Constable B. Madushan Kumara and directed the Court Sergeant to detain him (the prosecution witness) until the rising of the Court. The two PSD suspects were taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the attack on the UNP 1999 election rally in Maradana junction where UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe presided. Prosecution witness Kumara told Court that he was not responsible for the attack on the UNP stage on December 18, 1999. On that day he was on official duty at the Temple Trees, the witness told Court. At this stage, State Counsel Ms. Menaka Wijesundera told Court that she is not proceeding with case as the main prosecution witness was going back on the first statement made by him to the CID and moved Court to withdraw the case against the two PSD men. Allowing the State Counsel's application, the Judge acquitted the two PSD men and severly warned the prosecution witness for making contradictory statements. Senior Counsel Lloyd Grey appeared for the prosecution witness Kumara, submitted an affidavit and told court that his client had not been any- where near the incident in Maradana junction on the day of the incident. Earlier the CID also took into custody the father of former PSD man Baddegana Sanjeewa for possessing twenty-two chairs and several other items which were on the UNP stage on the day of the incident. On pleading guilty to the charges, the Judge imposed a fine on him. Senior Counsel Ajith Pathirana appeared for the two PSD suspects. |
